One of the biggest things that people are known to do is cooking too much and wasting a lot of food day in and day out. The concept of having leftovers is great, but people often prefer to eat something fresh every day. A digital kitchen scale can go a long way to avoiding throwing money down the drain.

A kitchen food scale is not just for professional kitchens. When people look at the amount of food they are wasting, think about if it is because it didn’t taste good or was there too much of it made. In most cases, people just make up too much food and then it goes right into the can. If an electronic kitchen scale was being used, portions could be measured out and the right amount of food would be made each night.

Contrary to popular belief, a digital kitchen scales do not cost a lot of money. A high end one that is used in restaurants could be purchases, but that is a complete waste of money. For the home, a Salter electronic kitchen scale can be bought for less than $50. It can even be purchased on the Internet for free shipping.

With the small amount of money that is going to be invested in a digital kitchen scale, it will more than pay for itself over the first few months in food that is not being wasted. Most people actually find that they end up adjusting their shopping list and don’t spend as much because of the amount of time that food sits in their fridge once they get used to using the scale.

It is kind of the same concept that the restaurant industry uses when it comes to the grocery bill. If there is money sitting on the shelf doing nothing, then it cannot be used anywhere else. Instead of walking out of the store with a large grocery bill, the shopper can now spend less and use every ounce of food that they purchase while it is still fresh. That is a big difference and can certainly save a lot of money throughout the year.

One of the most frustrating things that one can experience when they are on a diet is having too much or too little food. People do not realize how easy it is to over eat even when you think you are monitoring everything that you consume. You wonder why last night you felt like you ate a house and tonight you are climbing the walls looking for something to munch on. A digital kitchen scale can help you with that.

Once you body gets used to eating a certain amount, it will tend to either be satisfied when it hits that spot or want more when you come up short. In the beginning days of a diet, when you are cutting back, it will be quite normal to feel some hunger pains as your stomach adjusts to the new intake amounts, but this should not be happening weeks and months into the food plan.

One of the major downfalls of people is that they don’t measure out their food portions. You are on a diet and only supposed to be eating 8 oz of your entrée, but you never check it. You just order 2 pounds of chicken from the grocery store and eat a portion regardless of how big or small it is. This is a critical error on any diet.

Believe it or not, you can actually be costing yourself a lot of money when you do this. What if all of the portions are 10oz portions? You have dinner over the next 4 nights and are not only eating too much, but you are also costing yourself an entire night’s dinner. If you would have taken the time to use your digital kitchen scale, you would have noticed that the portions were more than your diet called for and could have cut off the extra 2oz to have dinner for a 5th night.

Now of course you are wondering what you could possibly make with all of those chicken scraps that are cutting off because the electronic kitchen scale told you the pieces were too big. What can you not make? Small pieces of chicken are great for things like tacos, gumbos, soups and stir fry. You would actually be doing part of your prep work every night.

The next thing to figure out is how you are going to save all of this so that it doesn’t go bad while you are trimming off the fat so to speak. A tip that I learned a long time ago was to prepare all of my food when it is first delivered and then put it into food saver bags and freeze it.

When you do this, you are accomplishing two things. The first and most important is that you are saving money by getting the right portions. The second is that you are making life a lot easier down the road. Now instead of coming home from work and dreading cooking dinner, all you need to do is open up the fridge and take the marinated item that you pre-seasoned and throw it in a pan. By doing this, your diet will stay on track and you can cut 15-30 minutes off of your dinner prep time every night.
