By nature, the modern person has become a gadget freak. For some reason, they put new gadgets everywhere except for the one place that they can truly do some good, the kitchen. Instead of wasting money on a remote control that operates everything in the home, think about getting a digital kitchen scale that can save the household money and keep the family healthy as well.

Look around the average kitchen and there is more than likely a microwave, a blender, some type of mixer and maybe even a food processor. Now how many home kitchens also have an electronic kitchen scale in them as well? Isn’t it funny how the one thing that can save people money and help to keep them healthy is somehow always eliminated from the kitchen?

There are various types of electronic kitchen scales that can be used. While there are plenty of brand names that everyone would recognize, there are just as many smaller brand names that offer as much value and can fit into any décor that is featured in a kitchen. Just because they don’t have that big brand name label on them does not mean that they do not work just as well.

Now this little gadget is not going to do any good unless it is used properly. The best way to put it to use is by monitoring how much food is made and making sure that the meals are not overstuffing everyone at the dinner table. Most people are surprised by how much extra food they cook and how much an investment in something like a Salter electronic kitchen scale can pay off in such a short period of time.

The old saying of “waste not want not” has never been truer as far too much food gets thrown away in the average American home. By controlling the portions and making sure that only what is going to be consumed is cooked, the average family will save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars every year. That is equivalent to at least one mortgage payment, a couple of car payments or even a nice chunk of that future college fund.

One of the most frustrating things that one can experience when they are on a diet is having too much or too little food. People do not realize how easy it is to over eat even when you think you are monitoring everything that you consume. You wonder why last night you felt like you ate a house and tonight you are climbing the walls looking for something to munch on. A digital kitchen scale can help you with that.

Once you body gets used to eating a certain amount, it will tend to either be satisfied when it hits that spot or want more when you come up short. In the beginning days of a diet, when you are cutting back, it will be quite normal to feel some hunger pains as your stomach adjusts to the new intake amounts, but this should not be happening weeks and months into the food plan.

One of the major downfalls of people is that they don’t measure out their food portions. You are on a diet and only supposed to be eating 8 oz of your entrée, but you never check it. You just order 2 pounds of chicken from the grocery store and eat a portion regardless of how big or small it is. This is a critical error on any diet.

Believe it or not, you can actually be costing yourself a lot of money when you do this. What if all of the portions are 10oz portions? You have dinner over the next 4 nights and are not only eating too much, but you are also costing yourself an entire night’s dinner. If you would have taken the time to use your digital kitchen scale, you would have noticed that the portions were more than your diet called for and could have cut off the extra 2oz to have dinner for a 5th night.

Now of course you are wondering what you could possibly make with all of those chicken scraps that are cutting off because the electronic kitchen scale told you the pieces were too big. What can you not make? Small pieces of chicken are great for things like tacos, gumbos, soups and stir fry. You would actually be doing part of your prep work every night.

The next thing to figure out is how you are going to save all of this so that it doesn’t go bad while you are trimming off the fat so to speak. A tip that I learned a long time ago was to prepare all of my food when it is first delivered and then put it into food saver bags and freeze it.

When you do this, you are accomplishing two things. The first and most important is that you are saving money by getting the right portions. The second is that you are making life a lot easier down the road. Now instead of coming home from work and dreading cooking dinner, all you need to do is open up the fridge and take the marinated item that you pre-seasoned and throw it in a pan. By doing this, your diet will stay on track and you can cut 15-30 minutes off of your dinner prep time every night.

Let me ask you a question. How many times do you finish cooking dinner only to have tons of leftovers or food that ends up going right down the garbage disposal? If you are like the average family, you have your hand up in the air and are mumbling “all the time” to yourself. You may not have realized it, but a digital kitchen scale can go a long way to preventing that from happening as much.

It is unlikely that you will ever be able to produce the perfect amount of food for your family on a regular basis, but cooking too much is a waste of both time and money. If only there was a way to monitor this a little better and make sure that you made amounts closer to what they would actually eat.

Using a kitchen food scale is a great way to do this. You can start to measure out portions of vegetables, starches and entrees to ensure that you are actually making an amount that people will eat instead of wasting it all the time. Even if you are keeping them as leftovers, it is just not the same.

Just the term left over makes things seem unappealing. Go look in your fridge right now. While you say that you are not throwing anything away and that you keep everything that is not eaten as a left over, how often are they actually consumed? People will do everything they can to avoid opening up that Tupperware container and eating something that was made 2 or more days ago.

How is a kitchen scale going to help you prevent all of this you ask? You should pretty much have a feel for what your family eats, but that is often tough to judge when you are making raw amounts of food. You many know that hubby is going to have 3 scoops of potatoes and 2 scoops of fresh peas, but what is that in an amount?

After a bit of time, you can figure that he eats x ounces of this and the family eats x pounds of that. By measuring everything off before you ever even cook it, you are making sure that you only cook what is going to be eaten for that meal. Now you are not throwing anything away and every meal will feature close to the perfect amount of food on the table. The only thing that will go hungry is the garbage disposal.

Now you are not going to be perfect every time, but you will have a much better chance of not wasting food if you use a digital kitchen scale in your food preparation. At least now you are going in with an organized game plan instead of doing it off the hip. Over a few months, the money that you save on wasted food will be more than enough to pay for that new fancy scale you have sitting on the counter now.

There are many people who keep around a kitchen food scale. Most of the time these are the spring loaded kitchen food scales. These scales are old and out dated. It is time to upgrade the old spring loaded scale in lieu of a digital kitchen scale. There are many reasons for this and many things to look out for when you purchase a digital kitchen scale.

One reason for trading in the spring loaded scale for an electronic kitchen scale is because of the tare factor. Tare allows you to use a dish or bowl when weighing your product. When you put the dish or bowl on the scale you can set the value to zero so that only the weight of the items placed in the bowl or dish will be weighed.

With a spring scale, you may not get a perfect tare reading if you can use tare at all. Some spring scales do not come with a tare setting. You do not have to worry about this with digital kitchen scales. All of them come with a tare setting that can be used so that you can use a bowl or a dish with this scale.

Another reason that a digital kitchen scale is an upgrade from a spring loaded scale is that some of them will tell you how many calories are in a certain portion of food. You can preprogram the scale with the types of food you normally eat. The scale with then calculate the amount of calories that are in the weight.

When you purchase a digital kitchen scale, you also want to make sure that it will transition from metric to the American measuring system. This way you can easily transition from ounces to metric measurements easily. Many times recipes will call for grams instead of ounces.

While you will save money on a smaller electronic kitchen scale, this may not always be the best option. There may be times when you need to measure out large amounts of items. This can be when you are preparing a large meal such as Christmas Dinner for the entire family. You will need to have a scale that can weigh small amounts as easily as it can weigh large ones.

This can be a problem with a spring loaded scale. Many times they will simply not be able to hold up to large amounts of weight. They can break even if they say that they can handle up to a certain amount of weight. This is not intentional, but can happen over a period of time.

For a long lasting, durable and flexible scale, you should spend a bit more money on a large capacity digital kitchen scale. This way no matter what you need to weigh, you will have a scale that can handle the duty. A digital kitchen scale will also last longer and allow you more years of use as well.
